New Riders of the Purple Sage was a country rock band whose earliest lineups included Grateful Dead members Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Robert Hunter. Garcia took up the pedal steel guitar and played with NRPS who often opened for the Dead. Their biggest hit was 1973's "Panama Red," off of their only gold record.
