Artist Bio



Born John Joseph Sances in Boston, August 18, 1952, Sances received his formal training at the Montserrat College of Art (formerly Montserrat School of Visual Art) Beverly, MA. He is known primarily as a printmaker and muralist.

Sances has an exhibition record which spans more than a decade with solo exhibitions at the Alternative Museum in New York City, Berkeley Store Gallery and Spirit Square Center for the Arts, Charlotte, North Carolina

Sances has also exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC ("Committed to Print"), the Palo Alto Cultural Center ("Directions In Bay Area Print Making - Three Decades" ), the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts ( "Mission Grafica - Retrospective Exhibit"), Neue Gesellscaft (NGBK) Berlin, Germany ("San Francisco, Kusnst der Minder"), and the European Parliament, Luxembourg ("Freiden Und Umwelt" ).

He is a member of the California Society of Printmakers and served on the Berkeley Civic Art Commission from 1990 through 1994.

Co-founder of Mission Grafica at the Mission Cultural Center, San Francisco, he is also the founder and art director of Alliance Graphics, a union screenprint and design shop in Berkeley.

Awarded a grant by the Creative Work Fund to produce the portfolio "10 x 10: Ten Women Ten Prints"

A screenprinter with a strong commitment to community causes, he has collaborated with and printed the work of many well-known artists, including:
Yolanda Lopez, Carmen Lomas Garza, Komar and Melamid, Carrie Mae Weems, Mildred Howard, Enrique Chagoya, Leon Golub, Lorna Simpson, Luis Cruz Acezeta, Adrian Piper, Andres Serrano, Ben Sakoguchi, Gronk, Elly Simmons, Daniel Galvez, Rigo, Jerry Kearns, Rupert Garcia, Richard Kamler and Ester Hernandez.
